GENDER EQUALITY, POVERTY ELIMINATION, AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE
Solidarity means uniting to oppose gender-based exploitation in all its forms, with a shared goal…
Women in Africa are disproportionately affected by the harsh realities of climate change, with farmers experiencing alarmingly low agricultural productivity. These resilient women play a vital role in the distribution of agricultural supplies, ensuring that essential products reach households at reasonable prices. Yet, they grapple daily with the harsh impacts of climate change.
Market women, in particular, face the ongoing challenges posed by underdeveloped transport networks and frequent flooding, which significantly impact the prices of commodities. Despite these hurdles, women continue to strive valiantly to sustain their families amid hardship, hunger, and poverty.
At our organization, we’ve recognized the intricate intersections between feminism and various other forms of exploitation, including climate change and environmental degradation. This extends to the exploitation of native and indigenous women and lands for valuable resources. By understanding these intersections, we are better equipped to address the multifaceted challenges facing women in Africa and work towards a more just and equitable future.
Back in 1987, under the Montreal Protocol, all United Nations-recognized countries united in a crucial effort to ban the use of hazardous gases, including Methyl Bromide. This colorless and odorless chemical posed significant threats to both humans and the environment. Short-term inhalation of Methyl Bromide could lead to severe lung damage, and often, it’s women who are exposed to such chemicals as they leave their homes to earn a livelihood.
We continue to urge the authorities responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacturing, importation, exportation, distribution, sale, and use of various substances, including chemicals, to prohibit the importation of these harmful chemicals into Nigeria and other parts of the world. Our call is rooted in the imperative to protect our planet from substances that deplete the ozone layer—a critical shield against the Sun’s harmful rays. This protection is not only about safeguarding the environment but also about preserving lives and advocating for environmental justice.
Our unwavering commitment is to drive change and make this vital information accessible to the public. Our environmental programs shed light on the interconnectedness of the exploitation of women’s bodies and the land, demonstrating how both are linked to the exploitation of the Earth and its resources. Through these programs, we aim to highlight the pivotal roles that women play in sustaining our environment, emphasizing the urgent need for change.
